Authentic Conversations: The Importance of LGBTQ+ Representation and Allyship
As the SOA celebrates Pride Month, we’ve partnered with the Sex and Gender Alliance of Actuaries (SAGAA) to present the Authentic Conversations: The Importance of LGBTQ+ Representation and Allyship panel discussion. Our panelists will discuss authenticity in the workplace and representing identities in a potentially intimidating space, as well as highlighting allyship and how to support the LGBTQ+ community.

Cynthia T. Edwalds, FSA, ACAS, MAAA
Cynthia Edwalds is retired following her 43-year career. She was a Clinical Professor of Finance at DePaul University and the Executive Director of the Fred Arditti Center for Risk Management from 2014 - 2021 Prior to 2014 she had 36 years of diverse and substantive experience in the insurance industry, including 13 years at Munich American Re, 7 years on staff at the Society of Actuaries, and 6 years at Health Care Service Corporation. She currently serves on several Society of Actuaries committees including the Individual Life Experience Committee, the Valuation Basic Table Team, the Committee on Living to 100 Research Symposia, the Reinsurance Section Research Team, the Committee on Life Insurance Research, the Research Communications Oversight Group, and several subgroups of these committees. She chairs the Committee on Knowledge Extension Research and is the vice-chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
Dave Daley, ASA
David is a Senior Associate in the Life Actuarial advisory practice, based out of the Chicago office. He has 6 years of experience with consulting, and insurance firms. His experience includes actuarial modeling and model conversions, internal and external audit support, and annuity product development. David has deep expertise in FIS’s Prophet actuarial modeling platform and has played key roles in multiple Prophet model conversion, development, and optimization projects in the US. David’s volunteer roles include involvement with Society of Actuaries group and section leadership committees, including the Actuary of the Future and Product Development Section. David currently serves on the board of directors for the Sexuality and Gender Alliance of Actuaries (SAGAA). He leads the education committee for SAGAA responsible for the development and delivery of sessions on fostering an inclusive workplace environment for LGBTQ+ employees and allies.
J. Alfonso Carrillo-Lundgren FSA, EA
Alfonso is a Director in Willis Towers Watson’s (WTW) Retirement line of business and works closely across different Health, Wealth, and Career lines of business in his work on wellbeing, Diversity Equity, and Inclusion. Alfonso has 15 years of consulting experience in strategic design, funding, cost and risk management, administration, and participant experience for retirement plans, savings plans, post-retirement welfare plans, financial wellbeing programs, integrated employee wellbeing programs, and employee benefits strategies to support equity for diverse workforces. Alfonso is passionate about talent development and fostering inclusive workplaces. At WTW, Alfonso has led in the past several advisory and leadership roles in regional and national chapters of their Multicultural, Out@WTW (LGBTQ+), and Workability (disability, neurodiversity, and mental health) employee resource groups.
Mihal Zelenin
Mihal Zelenin (she/her) is a queer Jewish woman who works as an actuarial analyst at GEICO. She is the current Secretary of the Sexuality and Gender Alliance of Actuaries (SAGAA), as well as volunteering for other nonprofit organizations. Mihal is passionate about improving the world around her, and believes that such improvement must start with understanding the diversity of people's lived experiences and unique needs.
